ASGIS User Group Meeting
10:00 am January 18th 2005
ASTCA Conference Room

Quickbird and IKONOS imagery tiles completed

The DOC GIS Division completed image subsets for the repositioned Quickbird and IKONOS imagery for the Island of Tutuila. Imagery can be downloaded from the DOC external drive or copied onto a DVD for dissemination. The final version of the Quickbird will be available once the metadata is received from Digital Globe.

ASPA GRID update

ASPA is splitting the grids into East, West, and Central portions. By the next meeting it is expected that the grids will be finished.

DOC Buildings update

DOC GIS digitized all the buildings on Island using the 2001 IKONOS imagery. The buildings were validated based on ground field data collected during the May 2004 Agricultural Census. Attribute information recorded within the buildings layer include map spot ID, Building Category (Church, Commercial, Residential), Status (New, Destroyed), Comments, and Owner’s Name (approximately 1 out of every 20 buildings).

SDI and Executive Order Working Group Meeting

The next SDI working group meeting will be this Friday (January 21st) at 10am. The venue is being confirmed.

ASGIS User Group Website updates

Since the last meeting a new link was created with pictures from the 2004 GIS Day held in American Samoa on the 17th of November.

Upcoming conferences

There are several conferences in the near future. Next week member from DPW (Pete) and ASTCA (David) will attend the Pacific GIS conference in Sacramento, California next week.

The Ocean Symposium will be held on Island May 24-26th and Ocean Fest will be held May 27th. The Ocean Symposium will be held at the Tradewinds. There will be several sessions including topics on the Challenges & Issues of Watersheds, Perspectives on Near Shore, Harbors & Impacts on Ocean Areas, and Emerging Issues in Territorial, Regional & High Seas Areas.

NOAA CSC is holding GeoTools 2005 March 7-10th at Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. This will be an opportunity for viewing GIS in many environmental applications. The website is: www.csc.noaa.gov/GeoTools/

Agency Updates

ASPA

Fa’afetai and the wastewater division are currently working surveying man-holes and creating horizontal control points for several of the HARN points.

ASCC

This past semester there were 2 students identified that excelled in the GIS classes taught at ASCC that Land Grant can tap for technical resources. The students include Neal and Mokeni. David suggested that the student projects submitted to the GIS class could be potential Land Grant Symposium topics.

DPW

The new Director has not been appointed yet and the programs are in standby until the position is confirmed. There will be a internal department training on the Palau training received. DPW is going to launch a Land Planning Commission program next month for the registration on private and government land. Please see Pete for details.

ASTCA

ASTCA is continuing on the joint venture with DPW specifically Phase III and Phase IV in which DPW collected data points on ASTCA infrastructure. David has been working with the warehouse and is currently documenting the outside network for utilities in an effort to provide an agenda and outlines. Additionally, David is currently working on a benchmarking program that includes 4 ASTCA employees documenting ASTCA infrastructure with photography and bringing the information into a database that has multiple links within a JPEG image.

DOC

DOC GIS is still in the process of bringing the ArcIMS server on Island. Eric Gilman will be on Island on the 2nd or 3rd week of March to continue his research on Mangroves and Climate Change. The STATS group within DOC will begin a housing survey in the next few months for American Samoa. The DOC GIS division is currently preparing maps for the survey. A new dataset will be available soon on the Archaeological sites on Island. The ASHPO database of approximately 700 data entries was converted into a GIS data point layer. The new dataset will reside in the Cultural directory of the Databank.

Land Grant

ASCC Land Grant will be working on an invasive plant species map that will require hiking into the forest for validation. Another project that LG is working on is a database for forest stewardship clients. The database would include contact information, size of field area and would be used for follow up for the extension visits.
